Houseplants don’t have the ability to cook you dinner or walk the dog but after a quick tour through Pinterest or Instagram it is clear that indoor plants offer your household much more than just something pretty to look at (as if that isn’t enough).
Air purifiers
Plants absorb some of the particulates from the air at the same time that they take in carbon dioxide, which is then processed into oxygen through photosynthesis. But that’s not all—microorganisms associated with the plants & present in the potting soil are also responsible for much of the cleaning effects. A few of our favorite plants for clean air are Spider Plant, Dracaena, Ficus, Peace Lily, Boston Fern, Snake Plant, Aloe, Pothos/Devil’s Ivy, Aglaonema/Chinese Evergreen, and Philodendron.
Mood lifters
Hospital patients with plants in their rooms are more positive and have lower blood pressure and stress levels. Less indoor air pollutants plus increased humidity & more oxygen would make anyone feel better.
Productivity boosters
Similarly, indoor plants may make people smarter in the workplace by allowing them to stay alert and reducing mental fatigue.
Pet-safe
Our fur-babies are often home alone so we need to be sure they are safe from temptation by avoiding exposure to toxic plants such as Pothos/Devil’s Ivy, Philodendron, Monstera, Euphorbia, Schefflera, Jade and Sansevieria/Snake Plant. There are many beautiful indoor plants that are known to be pet-safe; some of our favorites are Bird’s Nest Fern/Asplenium nidus, Bromeliad, Hoya, Spider Plant, Echeveria, Staghorn Fern, Tillandsia/Air Plant, and Fittonia/Nerve Plant.
Easy-care
Find the right plant to match your lighting & lifestyle! Select a plant that will tolerate the type of lighting, temperatures & watering frequency you will provide for it.
Trend/style setters
“Fashion model” plants – used in magazine & decorator photo shoots or showcased in high-end venues such as restaurants, hotels or spas. Plants contribute to style with color, texture, leaf shape & form and can complete a look or make a statement. Currently the most commonly featured indoor plant in style magazines is the Fiddle-leaf Fig or Ficus lyrata.
Hanging plants & plants for vertical gardens
make the right plant selection for living walls, macramé hangers or dripping down from a high shelf. Some of our favorite hanging plants are Pothos, Philodendron, and Spider Plants.
Low-lighting
Don’t turn to artificial plants yet – we have solutions! Many plants grow well in indirect or low light but not all of them. Some of the best plants for low light include Chinese Evergreen/Aglaonema, Snake Plant, and Peace Lily.
DIY projects
Indoor plant projects are great for all-seasons but especially during winter months when we spend less time outdoors. Terrariums, succulent gardens, mounting plants to wood, forcing bulbs indoors and creating mini/fairy gardens are just of few DIY projects that are fun with houseplants.
Get a fresh start to the new year by adding a few new indoor plants to your home or office (I’d have one in my car if I could keep it warm enough)! Come learn more and get inspired to ‘adopt’ a plant for 2017; surely it will add more than just beauty to your life.
