If you’ve been by the garden centers recently you may have noticed some show stopping fresh container plantings for fall inspiration. Summer is over and the stores are stocked with fresh color for fall planting. If you’re quick, you may be able to swing by to snatch up one of these pre-planted beauties, otherwise here’s some inspiration to get you in the fall planting spirit.
Black Eyed Beauties
This combo is stuffed with impactful, straightforward fall inspiration. The Rudbeckias (AKA Black Eyed Susans) sport intense autumn colors that dominate the color scheme. Other ingredients include Pennisetum grass, Euphorbia ‘Black Bird’, Ceanothus ‘Diamon Heights’, Tiarella and Pansies in lemon & orange shades.
This combo looks complete in our basic terra cotta planters but doubles as a ready to go drop-in for any existing ceramic planter. If you don’t already use this trick, you should consider planting in plastic pots that can discretely fit inside your decorative one and voila instant seasonal color that can be switched out easily for the next season, that way you always have a fresh look without the hassle and expense of planting “permanent” plants. A majority of our inspirational mannequin pots are created with this method so our customers have an affordable grab & go without the expense of a ceramic planter.
Ornamentally Adorned
Don’t let these ingredients fool you. Ornamental Peppers and Ornamental Oregano bring texture and a showy display to this container combo but aren’t intended to be eaten. To balance out the design we’ve included heuchera, euphorbia and a wispy fall grass.
A Playful Pairing
This fun combination features an ever so special pink eyed zinnia that strays from traditional autumn colors but works beautifully with its neighboring plants. Another favorite featured here is the Chenille Plant.
These fuzzy blooms are irresistibly fun for the late summer to fall transition. Partners in this planting include: Amaranthus ‘Hot Lava’, Pannicum Grass ‘Heavy Metal’, Euphorbia, Heuchera ‘Marmalade’, Creeping Wire Vine and Hebe ‘Quicksilver’.
For the Faint of Fall
For those of you not thrilled with fall colors, here’s an alternative combination that brings a purple punch to center stage. The recipe includes: Pennisetum Grass ‘Black Stockings’, Ornamental Oregano “Kent Beauty’, Heuchera ‘Carnival Watermelon’, Russian Sage Perovskia, Purple Million Bells & Lavender Violas.
Freshly planted you can see that our favorite ‘drop-in’ strategy is being used here with a set of shiny black urn planters. The lip of the drop-in sits on the edge of the ceramic planter for easy in and out as the seasons change. In a couple of short weeks the trailers will spill over to disguise the plastic rim.
If you’ve made it this far you’re probably feeling pretty inspired for fall’s arrival! Hope to see you soon at one of our garden centers with a cart full of fall color. If you need help planning your fall containers contact our design expert, Jennifer Williams, to schedule an appointment.
