#1 FEED YOUR LAWN
Often lawns that lack proper fertilizer tend to grow thin. Adding fertilizer in the spring and fall will increase the vigor and thickness of your lawn. Try fertilizing with Dr. Earth Organic Lawn Food, while being chalked full of organic microbes, it also contains no phosphorus so your water ways can stay healthy too.
#2 CHOOSE THE RIGHT SEED FOR THE RIGHT PLACE
Most grasses don’t perform well in the dense shade, so stop trying. If you have morning sun and afternoon shade, there is hope. You should try planting bluegrass fescue, or bentgrass. These grasses better suited for the shade. Dennis 7 Dees have teamed up with Bailey Seed and OR turf to come up with a blend that is best suited for shade lawns in the Willamette Valley.
#3 WATER MANAGEMENT
Moss thrives in constant wet conditions. Over watering your lawn or poor drainage can help moss grow well. Moss tends to go dormant during the summer, however it grows faster than turf grass in the Spring and fall. By dethatching your lawn every spring between April and June, you will be able to remove the majority of the moss living in the thatch build up.
#4 SWEETEN YOUR SOIL
Turf grass grows optimally with a pH of 6.5-8. Let’s face it, with all the rain that falls in the valley, the pH of your soil is probably acidic. If you are not sure, conduct a pH test (you can get these at any of our garden centers) to learn where you stand. If you are like most folks, you will need to add lime to your lawn.
Note: If you are applying both lime and fertilizer, don’t mix the two in the same drop spreader. The chemical reaction will release the nitrogen meant for your lawn into the air.
#5 CHEMICAL METHODS
Iron compounds are the most common and effective way to stimulate turf grass while removing moss. Lilly millers Moss out comes in both a granular form as well as a liquid. The best results, you will need to cover the moss with the iron compound. For this reason, I tend to buy the hose end applicator. I hook up my hose to the moss out bottle, turn the nozzle and the applicator will dilute the concentrate in the bottle with my hose water. It’s super easy.
